NASA ‘1 Day of Total Darkness’ Hoax

Outline:
Report circulating via social media claims that the Earth will experience one full day of darkness starting on June 2nd, 2016. The claims have supposedly been confirmed by NASA.

Brief Analysis:
The claims in the report are utter nonsense. There will be no ‘day of total darkness’ in June (unless you are in Antarctica) and NASA has certainly not confirmed the supposed once in a million year event. The fake report is just the latest incarnation of a long running hoax that has circulated in various forms for several years.

Example:
NASA: Earth will experience one full day of darkness on June 2nd 2016

NASA has confirmed that the Earth will experience 1 day of total darkness between on June 2nd, 2016. The event, according to NASA, hasn’t occurred in over 1 Million years.Astronomers from NASA have indicated that the world will remain in complete darkness starting on Thursday, June 2nd, 2016 at 3 a.m. and will end on Friday 3rd, 2016 at 4:15 a.m. According to officials, the ” June Black Out” event will be caused by another astronomical event between Saturn and Jupiter.Earth One Full Day of Darkness Hoax

Detailed Analysis:

According to a would-be news report that is currently making its way around via social media, Earth will experience one full day of darkness on June 2nd 2016. Supposedly, the  ‘June Black Out’ event will be the result of another astronomical event between Saturn and Jupiter. The report claims that the event has been confirmed by NASA and this is its first occurrence for more than 1 million years.

But, of course, the claims in the report are fanciful nonsense. There will be no day of complete darkness in June. Nor has NASA confirmed any such event. (For the record, if you happen to be stationed in Antarctica, you may well experience days in June when the sun does not rise at all, but this normal and easily explainable event is not what the fake report is referring to).

The report has been posted on several fake-news and user-contributed ‘news’ websites.

In fact, this story is just another version of the long running ‘days of darkness’ hoax that has been duping people around the world for several years. Other versions have warned of 3, 6, 8, and 15 NASA confirmed ‘days of darkness’ at various dates throughout the year. This latest version is rather miserly, promising only one day of darkness rather than the multiple days of darkness promised in more generous variants.

All versions are equally nonsensical and should not be taken seriously.

In other news, Hoax-Slayer can confirm that the NIGHT of June 2nd will indeed be devoid of sunlight.
